The Roads Around Nephi

Nephi is the Juab County seat, on I-15 south of the Utah County line. SR-28 runs through town from Levan and Gunnison, and SR-132 crosses it on the way from Lynndyl and Leamington in the west to Fountain Green, Moroni and US-89 at Pigeon Hollow Junction in the east. Freeway travelers, Sanpete County commuters and local drivers all funnel through the same few intersections.

I-15 past Nephi

The freeway carries statewide freight and travelers between the Wasatch Front and southern Utah. Rear-end collisions near the Nephi exits, lane-departure crashes from fatigue and tractor-trailer wrecks produce the most serious injuries.

SR-28 through town

Route 28 comes north from Gunnison through Levan, passes through Nephi and meets I-15 north of town. In town it carries local businesses and cross traffic; south of town it is a two-lane highway where passing and turning decisions cause head-on and broadside crashes.

SR-132 east toward Sanpete County

East of Nephi, SR-132 heads through the mountains to Fountain Green and Moroni before reaching US-89. Curves, grades, deer and winter ice make lane departures and head-on collisions the concern, and response times are longer outside town.

SR-132 west toward Leamington

Westbound, Route 132 crosses open country to Leamington and Lynndyl. Long straight stretches invite high speeds, and the questions after a crash are usually speed, fatigue and who drifted across the center line.

SR-78 and the Levan connection

SR-78 links I-15 at Mills Junction with Levan, south of Nephi. Rural junctions like this one, where a driver stops or turns across fast traffic, are where many broadside crashes begin.

Who responds to Nephi crashes

The Nephi City Police Department, at 42 East 200 North, handles collisions inside city limits. The Juab County Sheriff’s Office covers unincorporated roads, and the Utah Highway Patrol generally takes I-15. If a road defect, a work zone or a government vehicle contributed, § 63G-7-402 requires a notice of claim within one year.

PIP Is the First Payer

Under Utah Code § 31A-22-307, your own personal injury protection covers at least $3,000 in medical care and 85% of lost gross income, up to $250 per week for up to 52 weeks, regardless of fault. See how Utah’s no-fault system works.

An emergency visit at Central Valley Medical Center, or an ambulance transfer north to Utah County, can exhaust that coverage fast. A person covered by PIP may pursue general damages from the at-fault driver only with one of these under § 31A-22-309:

  • Medical costs exceeding $3,000
  • A broken bone of any kind
  • Objectively documented permanent impairment or disability
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Dismemberment
  • Death

Meet one and the at-fault driver’s liability insurer owes the entire claim. An uninsured motorist claim is exempt from the threshold. When the other policy is too small, underinsured motorist coverage can add to the recovery.

Fault Allocation in Juab County

Utah’s comparative negligence statute, § 78B-5-818, subtracts your share of fault from your damages and allows recovery only from defendants whose combined fault is greater than yours.

On I-15, the dispute is usually following distance or a lane change; on SR-28 and SR-132, a pass or a turn across traffic. Freeway drivers scatter quickly, so the officer’s report, truck data, dashcam footage and witness contacts need to be gathered in the first days.

How long you have

Four years for most injury suits (§ 78B-2-307), two for wrongful death (§ 78B-2-304), and one year to file a notice of claim against Nephi City, Juab County or UDOT. Details are in our deadline guide.

Nephi Crash Claims We Handle

I-15 freeway crashes

Rear-end, lane-change and run-off-road collisions on the interstate and at the Nephi interchanges.

Semi-truck crashes

Tractor-trailers moving freight along I-15, where federal records and a commercial insurer come into play. Our truck accident guide explains the extra steps.

Two-lane highway crashes

Head-on and passing collisions on SR-28 toward Levan and SR-132 toward Fountain Green or Leamington.

In-town crashes

Intersection, driveway and parking-lot collisions on the streets of Nephi, including crashes involving pedestrians; see our pedestrian guide.

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers

Your own uninsured motorist coverage usually responds. In a no-contact crash, § 31A-22-305(6) requires clear and convincing evidence that the other vehicle existed, beyond your own testimony, so witness names are important.

What To Do After a Nephi Crash

  • Call 911 and confirm whether Nephi Police, the sheriff’s office or the Highway Patrol is taking the report; keep the case number.
  • See a doctor that day. Central Valley Medical Center is a state-designated Level IV trauma center, and Utah Valley Hospital in Provo is the nearest Level II center for the most serious injuries.
  • Photograph the scene, the vehicles, the exit number or mile marker and any truck’s identifying numbers.
  • Get phone numbers from witnesses, many of whom are only passing through.
  • Start a PIP claim with your insurer, and do not give the other driver’s insurer a recorded statement yet.

Juab County crash lawsuits are filed in the Fourth Judicial District, which also serves Utah, Wasatch and Millard counties. Our office is in Draper, and our legal team can review a Nephi case by phone; most claims settle, but each is prepared for trial. See our Santaquin car accident page and Provo personal injury page.
