Riverton's Busiest Crash Zones

Riverton's roads were laid out for a much smaller town. Two state highways now carry fast commuter traffic past its neighborhoods, Redwood Road and 12600 South carry the shopping and school traffic, and road work has hardly paused in years. The full street-by-street ranking for Riverton is on our Riverton’s most dangerous roads page.

Bangerter at 13400 South

UDOT's new 13400 South interchange reopened east-west travel in September 2025, part of the work that made Bangerter stoplight-free, and the rebuilt ramps changed how drivers enter and leave the highway. Merge and ramp collisions are the pattern to watch.

Mountain View Corridor (SR-85)

Still signalized at its cross streets here. UDOT has run nightly lane closures between 13400 South and Porter Rockwell Boulevard, and plans a full freeway conversion with construction expected to start in 2027, so shifted lanes and signal crashes will be part of Riverton driving for years.

Redwood Road and 12600 South

Riverton's commercial crossroads, with heavy left-turn volume, retail driveways and traffic feeding Bangerter. Signal timing and turning gaps are usually disputed.

School and neighborhood streets

Riverton is young and family-heavy, and its residential streets carry children walking and biking to school. Backing, crosswalk and school-zone crashes are their own category of claim.

Work zones

Temporary striping, barrels and shifted lanes on Mountain View and around new development. Signage and traffic control can make a contractor or agency responsible alongside a driver.

Who Responds and When to Act

The Riverton Police Department covers city streets, and the Highway Patrol usually covers the state highways. A claim that involves UDOT, a work zone or a public vehicle needs a notice of claim within one year.

Covering the Medical Bills

Your own policy's PIP pays first in Utah, regardless of fault: no less than $3,000 in medical costs, plus lost income at 85% of gross up to $250 weekly for as long as 52 weeks. PIP explained.

For pain and suffering from the driver who caused the crash, your injury needs to meet one of Utah's threshold categories:

  • Medical expenses beyond $3,000
  • A bone fracture
  • Permanent disability or impairment confirmed by objective findings
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Dismemberment
  • Death

Past the threshold, the other driver's liability policy covers the full claim, and if it's too small your UIM coverage stacks on it. About UIM.

When Fault Is Divided

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 lowers your recovery by your share of fault and allows none unless the defendants' fault is greater than yours.

At the Bangerter ramps the insurer will question your merge; on Redwood Road, your left turn; near a school, whether you should have seen the child sooner. Photos, doorbell and business video, and witnesses answer those questions.

Time Limits

Four years for most injury claims, two years for wrongful death, and a one-year notice for claims against UDOT, Salt Lake County or Riverton City. Every Utah deadline.

Riverton Accident Cases

Bangerter's rebuilt 13400 South ramps and Mountain View's signalized crossings, including rear-end chains in stop-and-go traffic.

After a Riverton Crash

  • Call 911 and write down the case number and whether Riverton Police or the Highway Patrol took the report.
  • Get checked right away. Intermountain Riverton Hospital is a Level IV trauma center that evaluates and stabilizes; the most serious injuries go on to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, a Level I center.
  • Photograph the scene, including lane markings, signals and any construction signs.
  • Take down witness names and numbers on the spot.
  • Report to your own insurer for PIP and skip the other insurer's recorded statement for now. Next steps in a case.

Riverton cases that are filed go to Third District Court for Salt Lake County, at the Matheson Courthouse downtown or the West Jordan courthouse at 8080 South Redwood Road. Most settle beforehand.
