In Saratoga Springs, the Jordan River Parkway Trail follows the river where it leaves Utah Lake. The city describes the paved trail as running along the river and north of the lake in the northeast part of town, with access at Shoreline Park, Saratoga Road (2300 West), RC Airplane Park and Inlet Park. Inlet Park, at 222 South Saratoga Road, is also the trailhead for the Utah Lake Shoreline Trail, which runs in segments along the lake's west side, and farther south the Pelican Bay Trail follows the shore near Marina Park. Most serious crashes, though, happen on the streets in between.

Two sets of rules apply depending on where you were. On a path or in a crosswalk, a rider has a pedestrian's rights and duties; on the roadway, a driver's. Which applied often decides who had the right of way. If you were hurt some other way, our Saratoga Springs personal injury page is a better place to start.

Trail Rules and Road Rules

On a sidewalk, path or trail, or riding across a roadway in a crosswalk, a cyclist has the rights and duties of a pedestrian, must yield to people on foot, must give an audible signal before passing them, and may not ride faster than is reasonable and prudent (Utah Code § 41-6a-1106). On the roadway, a rider has the rights and obligations of any other vehicle operator (§ 41-6a-1102), so a driver turning left across your lane on Redwood Road owes you the same yield owed an oncoming car (§ 41-6a-903).

Passing distance. A driver may not knowingly, intentionally or recklessly operate within three feet of a bicyclist; it is an infraction, and a class C misdemeanor if the rider is injured (§ 41-6a-706.5). Lane position. A rider slower than traffic keeps as far right as practicable, except when passing, turning left, going straight past a right-turn-only lane, or avoiding hazards such as parked cars, debris or a lane too narrow to share (§ 41-6a-1105). Stop signs. The same section lets a cyclist slow and roll through a stop sign after yielding to pedestrians, traffic in the intersection and oncoming vehicles close enough to be an immediate hazard. Doors. Opening a car door into moving traffic is barred unless it is safe (§ 41-6a-1704); our dooring guide explains who pays.

Coverage for an Injured Rider

A bike crash in Saratoga Springs can draw on more than one policy:

  • The at-fault driver's liability insurance, which covers medical care, lost income and pain once fault is shown.
  • Your household's auto policy, which may provide PIP for early bills depending on how it defines an insured, plus uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage when the driver fled or carried too little.

Utah's PIP floor is $3,000 for medical care, plus 85% of lost gross income capped at $250 a week for up to 52 weeks (§ 31A-22-307). An ambulance ride and a night in the hospital can use up both. Our bicycle claims guide shows the order in which policies pay.

Fault and Filing Deadlines

Utah reduces a rider's award by the rider's share of fault and bars recovery unless the defendants' combined fault is greater (§ 78B-5-818). Most claims against a driver must be filed within four years (§ 78B-2-307). A claim that a city path, signal or road defect contributed needs a written notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). For a child, the deadline on a claim against the driver generally does not run until age 18 (§ 78B-2-108). Our deadline guide covers the rest.

Saratoga Springs Riding Hazards

Trail access points. At Saratoga Road and the park lots, riders move between pedestrian rules and road rules in a few feet. Redwood Road (SR-68). UDOT recorded 1,460 crashes on it inside city limits from January 2018 through August 4, 2025, a third of the city's street crashes; 400 North, Pony Express Parkway, Crossroads Boulevard and Pioneer Crossing were its busiest junctions. Pony Express Parkway. Its yearly count rose from 21 crashes in 2020 to 56 in 2024, and 118 of its crashes happened at Redwood Road. Thunder Boulevard near Westlake High School. A teen driver was involved in 73.0% of its crashes, the highest teen share among the city's ten busiest streets. These are all-vehicle figures; the data does not single out bicycles.

The trail-or-road question also affects who pays. A crash caused by a driver is a claim against that driver and insurer. A crash caused by the path itself, such as a broken edge, a missing warning sign or a badly placed post on a public trail, may be a claim against the government body that maintains it, with the one-year notice. Saratoga Springs Police handle most city-street crashes from the Public Safety Building at 367 South Saratoga Road; the Utah Highway Patrol often takes Redwood Road, Pioneer Crossing and SR-73.

Common Ways Riders Get Hit Here

A driver turning right onto Redwood Road while looking left for a gap, never seeing a rider in the crosswalk; a left turn across a cyclist on Pony Express Parkway; a new driver pulling out of a school lot; a pass with inches to spare; a door opened from a car parked on a subdivision street; and gravel or construction debris on fresh pavement.

Injuries and Nearby Hospitals

Riders hit by cars suffer broken collarbones, wrists and hips, concussions, facial fractures, spinal injuries and road rash, often several at once. Holy Cross Hospital – Mountain Point at 3000 North Triumph Boulevard in Lehi is a Level III trauma center on the Utah Bureau of EMS list, and the most serious injuries may go to Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, a Level II center. With PIP in the picture, a pain-and-suffering claim against the driver needs a § 31A-22-309 threshold, such as a fracture or medical bills over $3,000.

Losses a Rider Can Claim

  • Economic damages: emergency care, surgery, therapy, lost pay and reduced future earnings, plus the bike, helmet, lights and clothing.
  • Non-economic damages: pain, sleepless nights, anxiety about riding near traffic, and the trail rides and family outings that stopped.
  • Long-term needs: future procedures, ongoing therapy and help at home when an injury does not fully heal.

How Insurers Push Back

The rolling-stop accusation comes up often, and § 41-6a-1105(5) frequently answers it: a cyclist who slowed and yielded was allowed to proceed. The rest of the useful evidence is physical: the damage pattern on the bike, where the car stopped, ride data showing your speed, and doorbell cameras in the neighborhoods along the route. Ask quickly; home systems may keep only a few days of video. If you were driving instead, our Saratoga Springs car accident page covers local roads.

Saratoga Springs Cyclist FAQ

Questions From Riders Hurt in Saratoga Springs

A car hit me while I was crossing a street on the Jordan River Parkway Trail. Did I have the right of way?

In a crosswalk, a rider has a pedestrian's rights and duties under Utah Code § 41-6a-1106. A driver must slow or stop for someone crossing within a crosswalk on the driver's half of the road (§ 41-6a-1002), but a person may not suddenly leave the curb into the path of a car too close to stop. The evidence usually shows which happened.

Can a cyclist roll through a stop sign in Utah?

Yes, if the rider slows to a reasonable speed and yields to pedestrians, traffic in the intersection and oncoming vehicles close enough to be an immediate hazard (§ 41-6a-1105(5)). The rule does not apply at an intersection with an active railroad crossing. A driver who assumed you had to stop may still be at fault.

A car passed me inches away and I crashed without being touched. Do I have a claim?

Possibly. Utah bars drivers from knowingly, intentionally or recklessly passing within three feet of a cyclist (§ 41-6a-706.5). If the driver left, uninsured motorist coverage may apply, but a no-contact claim requires clear and convincing proof that the vehicle existed, beyond your own testimony (§ 31A-22-305(6)), so witnesses and video matter.

Will my own car insurance help even though I was on a bike?

It can. Your household auto policy's PIP may cover a cyclist's early treatment, depending on its terms, and your UM or UIM coverage applies when the driver who hit you was uninsured, underinsured or never identified.

What does it cost to hire you?

The consultation is free. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.

My child was hit riding to school. How long do we have?

Utah generally pauses the deadline on a child's claim against a driver until age 18 (§ 78B-2-108). If a city path or signal is part of the claim, do not rely on that; the one-year notice under § 63G-7-402 may still apply. Video and witnesses disappear much sooner either way.
