Lehi Motorcycle Accident Lawyer

Hit on a motorcycle in Lehi, on SR-92 or heading up American Fork Canyon? Free consultation, and no attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.

A ride out of Lehi usually starts in commuter traffic. Timpanogos Highway (SR-92) funnels tech-campus and outlet traffic to the I-15 interchange, Pioneer Crossing carries west-side drivers toward the freeway, and the 2100 North construction zone keeps moving lanes and barrier. Head east on SR-92 and the same highway turns into the American Fork Canyon and Alpine Loop route, a mountain road UDOT gates closed each winter, typically from November into May or June.

That mix hands the other driver's insurer two ready-made stories: in town, the rider was weaving; in the canyon, the rider took the curve too fast. A Lehi motorcycle claim holds up when it rests on things that can be measured instead. If you were in a car rather than on a bike, our Lehi car accident page is the better starting point.

Lehi Roads Where Riders Get Hit

A common pattern is a driver turning left in front of an oncoming motorcycle. Utah requires a left-turning driver to yield to oncoming traffic close enough to be an immediate hazard (Utah Code § 41-6a-903), yet one headlight is easy to misjudge at the long signal cycles on Pioneer Crossing and the SR-92 ramps. Merges are the other trouble spot: the same section makes a driver in an ending lane yield to traffic in the continuing lane, which comes up every time a work-zone taper near 2100 North squeezes two lanes into one.

Utah Law Every Lehi Rider Should Know

No PIP on the bike. Utah does not require personal injury protection on a motorcycle policy, and motorcycle operators are not covered by PIP for injuries suffered while riding (Utah Code § 31A-22-302). Your first medical bills fall to health insurance or any med-pay you bought. Our no-fault guide shows how that differs from a car claim.

A helmet question is not a fault question. Riders under 21 must wear one, but going without a helmet is not comparative negligence and cannot be offered as evidence on negligence, injuries or mitigation of damages in a civil case (§ 41-6a-1505(6)).

Filtering has strict limits. Moving past stopped vehicles is allowed only on a road with two or more lanes in your direction and a speed limit of 45 mph or less, or on a multi-lane off-ramp but never an on-ramp, at 15 mph or less and only when it is safe (§ 41-6a-704(6)). Whether a stretch of Pioneer Crossing or Timpanogos Highway qualified depends on its posted limit and lane count that day. Our lane filtering guide has the details.

Where the money comes from. The at-fault driver's liability policy pays first. For policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025, Utah's bodily injury minimums are $30,000 per person and $65,000 per crash (§ 31A-22-304), which a surgery can use up quickly. Your own underinsured motorist coverage can add to it.

Deadlines. An injury lawsuit generally has four years, but a claim against Lehi City, Utah County, UDOT or UTA requires a written notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). See our Utah deadlines page.

Reports, Agencies and Records

Inside city limits the Lehi Police Department investigates. Its crash reports are released through the LexisNexis BuyCrash portal or by a records request to the department at 128 North 100 East. The Utah Highway Patrol generally handles I-15 and the state highways. Wherever you crash, write down which agency responded and the report number before you leave, because every later step depends on it.

Two state-designated Level III trauma centers sit close by: Holy Cross Hospital – Mountain Point at 3000 North Triumph Boulevard in Lehi, and American Fork Hospital, according to the Utah Bureau of EMS trauma list. If you are admitted, ask someone to photograph the motorcycle, helmet and gear before the tow yard moves them.

Why These Crashes Happen

Drivers pulling out of business-park driveways onto Ashton or Triumph Boulevard without seeing the bike, lane changes into a rider sitting in a blind spot on I-15, rear-end impacts in stop-and-go traffic at the SR-92 interchange, loose gravel and uneven pavement where a work zone ends, and oncoming cars cutting across the center line on the tight turns up American Fork Canyon.

Common Rider Injuries

With nothing around them, riders take the impact directly: broken wrists, collarbones, legs and pelvises, road rash deep enough to need skin grafts, spinal injuries, and brain injuries that can occur even inside a good helmet. Because motorcycle policies aren't required to carry PIP (§ 31A-22-302), Utah's no-fault injury threshold (§ 31A-22-309) may not apply to a rider the same way it applies to a car occupant. Talk to us about how it affects your claim.

What an Injured Lehi Rider Can Claim

  • Economic losses: emergency care, surgery, therapy, future procedures, lost wages and reduced earning ability, plus the motorcycle, helmet, jacket and other gear.
  • Pain and life changes: the injury itself, visible scarring, and the time on the bike, at work and with family that the crash took.
  • Future care: when a spinal or brain injury needs treatment or help at home for years.
  • Punitive damages: reserved for rare conduct, such as a driver who was impaired or deliberately reckless.

Answering the Adjuster

Adjusters tend to ask about your speed, how long you have ridden and whether you wore a helmet, and they may offer a check before a surgeon has told you what comes next. The answers come from evidence gathered early: the police report, the car's event data, signal timing at the intersection, and video from nearby offices and stores. Before signing anything, read whether to take a first offer and how a Utah injury case moves. Our Lehi personal injury page covers the wider picture.

Lehi Rider Questions

Questions Lehi Riders Ask

Does my motorcycle insurance pay my medical bills the way PIP would?

Usually not. Utah does not require PIP on a motorcycle, and PIP does not cover a rider hurt while operating one. Health insurance or optional med-pay may pay first, and the at-fault driver's liability coverage is responsible for the rest.

A driver turned left in front of me on Pioneer Crossing. Who is at fault?

Utah requires a left-turning driver to yield to oncoming traffic close enough to be an immediate hazard, so the driver often carries most of the fault. Any share assigned to you reduces your recovery, and you recover nothing only if your share is 50% or more.

I was not wearing a helmet. Can the insurer use that against me?

Not on fault. Utah law says going without a helmet is not comparative negligence and cannot be offered as evidence of negligence, injuries or failure to mitigate damages in a civil case.

My crash was on the Alpine Loop in American Fork Canyon. Does that change anything?

It can. A different agency may write the report, and if the condition of the road played a part, a claim against a government body has short notice deadlines, so it is worth calling early.

What does it cost to hire you?

The consultation is free. You pay nothing up front, and there are no attorney fees unless we win; the fee comes out of the recovery.

How long do I have to file?

Generally four years for an injury claim in Utah, but only one year for notice when a government entity is involved, and traffic and business video can be recorded over quickly.
