Sandy Slip and Fall Lawyer

Took a hard fall at a Sandy shopping center, theater, event or apartment? When a hazard someone should have handled caused it, you may be owed compensation. Free consultation, and no attorney fees unless we win.

Sandy's fall claims tend to come from three places: the commercial core along State Street and 10600 South, event nights that move big crowds through parking areas, and the east-bench neighborhoods where storms leave more snow than the valley floor sees. Store entrances, theater lobbies and sloped driveways all show up in these files.

Shaded walks and sloped lots on the bench can hold ice long after a storm passes. An owner who plows once and never comes back to treat the refreeze is a pattern we look for, along with snow piles that push pedestrians off the cleared path.

Building a Sandy Fall Case

Three things decide liability: a dangerous condition, knowledge of it or an inspection that would have revealed it, and a link between that condition and your injury. No officer investigates those questions for you after a fall.

At a large center, first learn which business or management office controls the spot where you went down. The incident report, the snow contractor's log and the security video are often held by three different companies, and each needs its own written request.

Utah Premises Duties

Under Utah law, an owner's obligations shift with the reason you were there:

  • Paying customers and event guests: reasonable inspection, repair and warning.
  • Personal guests: a warning about hazards the host knows exist.
  • Trespassers: a limited duty in most situations.

An obvious danger is not always a defense. The real question is whether the owner should have expected people to get hurt even though the danger was visible, such as when the only path into a store crosses ice.

Splitting fault. Utah's rule in § 78B-5-818 lowers your award by your percentage and bars it unless the defendants' combined fault is greater than yours.

Deadlines. Four years is the general limit for an injury suit. Sandy City, Salt Lake County and UTA are governmental entities, so a fall on their sidewalks, in their parks or on a TRAX platform requires a notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). Every deadline is laid out on our statute of limitations page.

Sandy Fall Locations

The Shops at South Town, at 10450 South State Street, and the big-box centers along State Street, where entrances, parking fields and the sidewalks between stores are managed by different parties.

Jordan Commons, with its multi-screen movie theater, restaurants and office tower, and event nights near America First Field, where crowds leave through parking areas and walkways after dark.

TRAX platforms such as Sandy Expo, plus city sidewalks and parks, where UTA or Sandy City owns the property and the one-year notice applies. For vehicle injuries see our Sandy car accident page, and our Sandy personal injury page covers the wider picture.

Hazards in Sandy

Ice on sloped walks and ramps, spilled drinks on theater and restaurant floors, uneven pavement between storefronts, curb edges buried by plowed snow, poorly lit stairs and broken railings.

Common Fall Injuries

Fractured wrists and ankles, hip injuries, torn shoulders and head trauma. Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, a Level I trauma center, treats many of the most serious south-valley injuries.

Compensation Categories

  • Money you lost: treatment costs, projected future care, wages and diminished earning power.
  • What the injury took: physical pain, emotional strain and a narrower daily life.
  • Permanent needs: help at home or ongoing therapy when recovery stops short.

Defenses in Sandy Cases

Adjusters often claim the storm was still going, that you chose a shortcut through the snow, or that the store had no way of knowing about a spill. Hourly weather records, plow and salting logs, and video of the area in the hours before your fall answer those points. Salt Lake County suits go to the Third Judicial District Court, based at the Matheson Courthouse in Salt Lake City. Common Questions

Sandy Fall Questions

I slipped on ice outside a store at The Shops at South Town. Do I have a claim?

Possibly. The question is who controlled that walkway and whether they had enough time to clear or treat the ice before you fell. Weather records and snow-removal logs help answer it.

I fell leaving an event near America First Field. Who is the claim against?

It depends on who owned or maintained that exact area, whether a venue, a parking operator, UTA or the city. A public owner triggers the one-year notice deadline, so the owner needs to be identified quickly.

Will my own carelessness be held against me?

It can reduce your award. Utah Code § 78B-5-818 subtracts your percentage of fault and bars recovery unless the defendants' combined fault exceeds yours.

What will a lawyer cost me?

You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win. How case costs are handled is spelled out in the written agreement.

I fell on a TRAX platform. What is the deadline?

UTA is a government entity, so a written notice of claim is due within one year of the fall. That notice comes before any lawsuit.

What should I save after a fall?

Your shoes, photos of the hazard and the surrounding area, the names of employees you spoke with, witness contacts and every medical record from the first visit on.
