South Jordan's Truck Traffic, Road by Road

South Jordan is still being built. Material trucks feed new housing on the west side, tractor-trailers stock the stores around The District, and through freight uses Bangerter and the Mountain View Corridor to cross the valley. Those uses overlap on roads that changed shape in just the last few years.

Bangerter Highway underpasses

With underpass interchanges at 9800, 10400 and 11400 South, Bangerter now runs without signals from I-15 in Draper to 4100 South. Trucks entering from the new on-ramps have short distances to reach highway speed, and drivers who pass a slow-accelerating rig on the ramp are often the ones caught in the merge.

Mountain View Corridor (SR-85)

Here SR-85 is still a divided highway with signalized cross streets, and UDOT plans to rebuild the section between Porter Rockwell Boulevard and Old Bingham Highway as a freeway, with construction expected to start in 2027. Until then, near-freeway speeds end at red lights, and a truck that cannot stop in time turns a signal into a rear-end crash.

10400 and 11400 South

These east-west links carry trucks between I-15, Bangerter and Mountain View past The District, schools and apartments. Delivery trucks swinging left into retail driveways across oncoming lanes, and cars that stop behind them without room to spare, are the recurring pattern.

Daybreak and the Red Line

TRAX runs at street level through Daybreak, around Oquirrh Lake and a neighborhood designed for walking and biking. Construction and delivery trucks on these narrower streets have less room to turn, and a person on foot or on a bike next to a right-turning truck is especially exposed.

West-side construction access

Subdivision sites, utility projects and Mountain View lane closures put dump trucks and concrete mixers on collector roads and temporary access points. Trucks backing out of a site or pulling into traffic from a dirt road raise questions about the builder's traffic plan as well as the driver.

Responding agencies and public defendants

South Jordan Police investigate crashes on city streets, and the Utah Highway Patrol usually works I-15. If a TRAX train, a UDOT work zone or a city vehicle is part of the crash, the claim is barred unless a notice of claim is filed within one year (Utah Code § 63G-7-402).

Medical Costs After a South Jordan Truck Collision

Because Utah is a no-fault state, your own personal injury protection is the first to pay, whether or not the truck driver was at fault. Utah Code § 31A-22-307 requires at least $3,000 for medical care and replaces 85% of lost gross income, up to $250 per week, for as long as 52 weeks. Utah no-fault basics.

A truck impact often means imaging, a trauma evaluation and follow-up visits, which exceed that sum fast. To recover non-economic damages from the carrier and its driver, Utah Code § 31A-22-309 asks that at least one of these be true:

  • Your medical expenses exceed $3,000.
  • You suffered a fractured bone.
  • You have permanent disability or impairment, based on objective findings.
  • You were permanently disfigured.
  • You suffered a dismemberment.
  • The crash caused a death.

When one of those applies, the claim for your full losses goes against the liability coverage behind the truck. If that coverage is too small, your own UIM coverage adds on top rather than being offset; if the truck was uninsured, the threshold does not apply to your UM claim. Read about UIM claims.

Percentages of Fault

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 bars recovery unless the defendants' combined fault is greater than yours, and it reduces your award by the percentage assigned to you.

A carrier defending a South Jordan crash may say you followed the truck too closely toward a Mountain View signal, cut in at a Bangerter ramp, or rode into a turning truck's path in Daybreak. The truck's lighting, reflective markings, rear guard and braking data often answer that better than any statement.

When claims must be filed

Four years for most crash injuries (§ 78B-2-307); two years for wrongful death (§ 78B-2-304); one year to serve a notice of claim on UDOT, UTA, Salt Lake County or South Jordan City. The Utah statute of limitations guide has more.

Equipment Rules That Matter in Rear-End Truck Crashes

Rear impact guards

Trailers and semitrailers rated at 10,000 pounds or more and built on or after January 26, 1998 must carry a rear impact guard meeting federal safety standards, with the guard reaching within 4 inches of each side of the trailer (49 CFR 393.86). A missing, bent or undersized guard can let a car slide beneath the trailer.

Lights and reflectors

Commercial vehicles must meet the lamp and reflective-device requirements that applied when they were built (49 CFR 393.11). On an unlit stretch of Mountain View Corridor at night, a trailer with dead lamps or missing reflective markings is hard to see until it is too late.

No driving an unsafe truck

A motor vehicle may not be operated in a condition likely to cause a crash or a breakdown, and a truck found unsafe on the road may only be moved to the nearest safe place for repair (49 CFR 396.7). Worn brakes or failed lights noticed before the trip can make the carrier directly responsible.

Who else answers for the crash

Along with the driver and the carrier, the owner of a leased trailer, a repair shop and the contractor that called in a construction load may share fault. Our guide to Utah truck accident claims explains how those parties are identified.

When the truck is never found

If an unidentified truck caused the crash, your uninsured motorist coverage may be the path to recovery. If it never touched you, Utah Code § 31A-22-305(6) requires clear and convincing proof that it existed, and an independent witness, not just your own account, can supply it, so call police promptly and keep witness contacts.

Immediate Steps After a South Jordan Truck Crash

  • Call 911. South Jordan Police or UHP will investigate, and you should leave with a case number and the agency's name.
  • Get examined that day. Intermountain Riverton Hospital, a Level IV trauma center, is nearby, and the most serious injuries go to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, a Level I center.
  • Photograph the trailer's rear guard, lights and reflective tape, the USDOT number on the cab, and the lanes and signals.
  • Record names and numbers of witnesses, including TRAX riders or construction workers who saw it.
  • File for PIP with your own insurer, and do not give the trucking company's insurer a recorded statement.

South Jordan truck lawsuits go to the Third Judicial District Court for Salt Lake County, which sits at the Matheson Courthouse (450 South State Street) and in West Jordan (8080 South Redwood Road). Most resolve before trial, but the trailer itself may need to be inspected before it is repaired. Call (801) 921-5134 or request a free case review. Free consultation. No attorney fees unless we win.
