SALT LAKE COUNTY

Alta Car Accident Lawyer

Hurt on Little Cottonwood Canyon Road, in an Alta parking lot or on a ski bus? Free case review, and no attorney fees unless we win.

Driving to Alta

Alta sits at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon, and every car, ski bus and delivery truck reaches it on State Route 210. The town's year-round population is small, but winter weekends bring thousands of skiers up the same two lanes, often in falling snow, and avalanche control can close the road with little notice.

SR-210 up Little Cottonwood Canyon

Steep grades, curves, packed snow and a rock face or drop-off beside the lane. Slide-offs, rear-end impacts in crawling traffic and cars drifting over the centerline on the descent are the familiar crashes, and a driver on the wrong tires will have trouble calling the loss of control unavoidable.

Traction requirements

UDOT turns on a traction-device requirement for the canyon under administrative rule R920-6: a two-wheel-drive car must have three-peak mountain snowflake tires on every wheel or chains on two drive wheels, and an AWD or 4WD vehicle needs at least mud-and-snow rated tires all around. The Town of Alta tells visitors to expect snow-tire, chain or four-wheel-drive rules on SR-210 from November through May.

Wasatch Boulevard and the canyon mouth

On storm mornings, uphill traffic backs up from the canyon entrance onto Wasatch Boulevard. Drivers arriving fast from the valley meet stopped cars, and rear-end and lane-change crashes follow.

Alta's parking lots and road shoulders

People walking in ski boots cross between cars, buses and lodges on packed snow. From December 11, 2026 through April 4, 2027, the town requires a permit to park anywhere on the north side of SR-210, and Alta Ski Area requires parking reservations on weekends and holidays, so drivers circle, stop and back out in tight, icy spaces.

UTA ski buses

UTA Route 994 runs from Historic Sandy Station to Snowbird and Alta. Passengers can be hurt in a hard stop, in a collision, or while stepping down onto an icy shoulder, and because UTA is a public transit district, a claim against it requires a notice of claim within one year.

Who responds in the canyon

Within town limits the Alta Marshal's Office is the law enforcement agency, and it works with the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office on major incidents. Lower on the canyon road a different agency may take the report, so ask the officer which one they work for and get the case number. The Unified Fire Authority provides fire and emergency medical response in town.

PIP Comes First, Even in the Canyon

After any Utah car crash, your own personal injury protection covers at least $3,000 in medical care and 85% of lost gross income, capped at $250 weekly for up to 52 weeks, whoever was at fault (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). Our PIP guide has the details.

An ambulance from the top of the canyon to a valley emergency room can use most of that on its own. To seek pain and suffering from the driver who caused the crash, Utah Code § 31A-22-309 requires at least one of these injuries or losses:

  • More than $3,000 of medical expense
  • A fractured bone
  • A permanent disability based on objective medical findings
  • Permanent scarring or disfigurement
  • Dismemberment
  • A fatality

With the threshold met, the at-fault driver's liability insurer owes the entire claim, and your underinsured motorist coverage can add to thin limits. Stacking UIM in Utah.

Fault on a Snow-Covered Road

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 lowers your damages by your own percentage of fault and blocks recovery unless the defendants' combined fault is greater than yours.

Utah Code § 41-6a-601 forbids driving faster than is reasonable and prudent for existing conditions, and it specifically mentions curves, narrow or winding roads and weather. In the canyon the other side will ask about your tires, your speed and your following distance. Photos of the road surface, the traction signs and the other car's tires, taken before a plow passes, are the best answer.

How long you have

Four years for most injury claims (§ 78B-2-307), two for wrongful death, and one year to file a notice of claim against UDOT, UTA, Salt Lake County or the Town of Alta (§ 63G-7-402). Details in our deadline guide.

Alta Crash Cases We Handle

Canyon slide-offs and head-on crashes

A driver without proper traction, or simply going too fast, loses control on SR-210 and strikes an uphill or downhill car.

Queue and rear-end crashes

Stop-and-go canyon traffic on powder days and the backup at the canyon mouth, including crashes involving shuttles and delivery vehicles.

Ski bus passenger injuries

Riders hurt on UTA buses or private shuttles. The public-entity notice deadline applies to UTA, so these claims cannot wait.

Pedestrians in the base area

Skiers struck while walking in ski boots between parked cars, bus stops and lodges. Low-speed impacts on snow still break hips, knees and wrists, and sight lines over plowed snowbanks are usually central to fault.

Uninsured and out-of-state drivers

Visitors come from everywhere, and some carry little or no coverage; your uninsured motorist policy can fill that gap. If a car ran you off the road without touching you, § 31A-22-305(6) requires clear and convincing proof of it beyond your own testimony, so collect witness names.

After a Crash In or Near Alta

  • Call 911. Inside town the Alta Marshal's Office responds; farther down the canyon, confirm which agency takes the report and get the case number.
  • Get evaluated that day, even if you drove yourself down. Intermountain Medical Center in Murray houses a Level I trauma center, and Alta View Hospital in Sandy has a 24-hour emergency department.
  • Photograph the ice or slush, any traction-law sign and whether it was lit, the other vehicle's tires, and where each car stopped.
  • Get names and phone numbers from other drivers and bus passengers who saw it; they scatter up and down the canyon.
  • Start PIP with your own insurer and decline a recorded statement to the other driver's company. How insurance claims are handled.

Alta is in Salt Lake County, so a lawsuit goes to the Third Judicial District Court, whose main courthouse is the Matheson Courthouse at 450 South State Street in Salt Lake City. Most claims resolve without trial, and we prepare each one for it anyway.
