Where Tremonton Collisions Happen

Tremonton is where two interstates meet: I-84 comes in from the Idaho line near Snowville and joins I-15 at the Tremonton Interchange. Truck traffic headed to and from the Northwest shares the corridor with Bear River Valley residents driving to Brigham City, Logan and Ogden, while SR-102 and SR-82 carry local traffic through town and out to Garland and the farms beyond.

The I-15 and I-84 junction

Two freeways merging means lane changes, weaving and heavy trucks slowing to exit. Sideswipes, rear-end chains and underride crashes involving tractor-trailers are the most dangerous patterns, and the carrier’s electronic data is what often settles who moved first.

SR-102 through town

Route 102 runs east from Thatcher and Penrose, passes through Tremonton and continues to Deweyville. In town it serves as a main commercial street, so turning traffic and business driveways create angle and rear-end collisions; outside town it becomes an open two-lane road.

SR-82 on 300 East to Garland

SR-82 leaves SR-102 and heads north on 300 East into Garland. Residential cross streets and drivers turning onto the highway from side roads make failure-to-yield crashes the recurring issue.

Farm roads and harvest season

The Bear River Valley is farm country, and slow tractors, grain trucks and equipment wider than a lane use the same state routes as commuters. Rear-end crashes and collisions with a vehicle turning into a field are common when an approaching driver misjudges the closing speed.

Wind, fog and winter

Open valley highways expose drivers to crosswinds, ground fog and blowing snow. A chain collision in low visibility can involve many vehicles, and who is responsible usually depends on whether each driver slowed down enough for what they could see.

Reporting agencies

The Tremonton/Garland Police Department, at 125 South 100 West, handles crashes in town. The Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office covers unincorporated county roads, and the Utah Highway Patrol generally works the interstates. If a UDOT work zone, a snowplow or a government vehicle was involved, a notice of claim is due within one year under § 63G-7-402.

Start With Your PIP Coverage

Utah’s personal injury protection pays before fault is sorted out: at least $3,000 in medical costs and 85% of lost gross income, up to $250 each week for as many as 52 weeks (§ 31A-22-307). Our Utah no-fault overview explains how it works.

An emergency visit at Bear River Valley Hospital, or a transfer to a larger center, can quickly go past that figure. For a PIP-covered person to seek non-economic damages from the at-fault driver, § 31A-22-309 requires one of these:

  • Medical expenses greater than $3,000
  • Any fracture
  • Permanent impairment or disability established by objective findings
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Dismemberment
  • A fatal injury

Satisfy one and the negligent driver’s liability carrier must address the entire claim. Uninsured motorist claims are not subject to this rule. If the liability limits fall short, your underinsured motorist policy may help close the gap.

Shared Fault in Box Elder County

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 reduces damages by the injured person’s share of fault, and recovery is available only against defendants whose combined fault is greater than that share.

Near the interchange, adjusters ask who changed lanes and who was in a blind spot; on SR-102, who turned in front of whom; on farm roads, whether the slow vehicle was lit and marked. Truck data, dashcams, the trooper’s report and early photos resolve most of these disputes.

Deadlines that apply

Four years for most personal injury suits (§ 78B-2-307), two for wrongful death (§ 78B-2-304), and a one-year notice of claim against Tremonton City, Box Elder County or UDOT. Read the statute of limitations guide.

Tremonton Crash Claims We Handle

Interstate junction crashes

Merge, weave and rear-end collisions where I-84 meets I-15 and along the freeway on either side of town.

Tractor-trailer crashes

Semis on the I-84 corridor, where federal safety rules, driver logs and a commercial insurer shape the claim. See the truck accident guide.

Farm-equipment crashes

Collisions with tractors, grain trucks and wide implements on SR-102, SR-82 and county roads around the valley.

In-town intersection crashes

Turning and driveway crashes on SR-102, 300 East and the streets around local businesses.

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers

Your uninsured motorist coverage generally pays. If a car forced you off the road and never touched your vehicle, § 31A-22-305(6) requires clear and convincing evidence of that car that goes beyond your own testimony.

Right After a Tremonton Crash

  • Call 911. Note whether Tremonton/Garland Police, the sheriff or the Highway Patrol responded, and ask for the case number.
  • Get medical care the same day. Bear River Valley Hospital at 905 North 1000 West has 24/7 emergency services and is a Level IV trauma center; Logan Regional Hospital is Level III, and McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden is Level II.
  • Photograph the vehicles, lane markings, any truck’s company name and DOT number, and farm equipment lights or flags.
  • Take down names and numbers of witnesses before they drive off.
  • Notify your own insurer to open PIP, and avoid giving a recorded statement to the other side’s carrier.
