St. George Rideshare Accident Lawyer
Injured in an Uber or Lyft in St. George? The policy that pays depends on the driver's app status when the cars met, and our legal team knows how to establish it. Free consultation, no attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.
Rideshare trips in St. George often start with a suitcase. Visitors land at St. George Regional Airport on Airport Parkway and ride into town, groups book cars toward Snow Canyon along SR-18 or out to Zion (the National Park Service puts the airport 49 miles from the park), and Utah Tech University students travel between the campus on University Avenue and jobs or apartments across the valley. When one of those rides ends in a collision, fault matters, but the coverage question comes first.
Utah requires very different insurance at each stage of a rideshare driver's shift, from $50,000 for one injured person up to $1,000,000 per occurrence. Whether you were the rider, a motorist the rideshare car struck on St. George Boulevard, someone walking downtown, or a local who drives for Uber or Lyft, we identify which layer was active and build the claim on it.
What the Driver's App Was Doing Decides the Coverage
Under Utah Code § 13-51-108, the insurance that must be in place follows the driver's status in the app. Applied to a St. George crash:
- App closed. No rideshare coverage is triggered, and the claim goes to the driver's own auto policy. Because Utah lets personal insurers write rideshare use out of their policies (§ 13-51-108(11)), expect that insurer to look hard at whether the app was really closed.
- App open, no trip accepted. This is what the statute calls the waiting period. Required liability limits are $50,000 for one injured person, $100,000 for everyone injured in the occurrence, and $30,000 for property damage.
- Trip accepted through drop-off. Utah defines a prearranged ride as beginning when the driver accepts the request and ending when the passenger gets out, so a driver heading to an airport pickup is already in this tier: at least $1,000,000 per occurrence in liability coverage, plus PIP, uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist coverage to the extent Utah law requires them.
Visitors often leave town before anyone asks for the trip receipt, and phones get replaced. We request the acceptance time, the trip log and the GPS record from the company rather than taking an adjuster's word for which period applied. Our guide to Utah rideshare insurance covers the tiers in detail.
Who Can Recover After a St. George Rideshare Crash
A claim does not depend on having been the customer. We hear from:
- Riders coming from the airport, heading to a hotel, or returning from a trailhead outside the city.
- Occupants of other vehicles, including visitors in rental cars, hit by someone driving for Uber or Lyft.
- Pedestrians and cyclists near Utah Tech and the downtown blocks, where cars stop at the curb to load and unload.
- Drivers working for the apps who are struck by another motorist, including out-of-state drivers unfamiliar with local roads.
More than one policy can apply to the same injury. If no rideshare driver was involved, our St. George car accident lawyer page is the better starting point.
Utah Law in a St. George Rideshare Case
Personal injury protection pays the first medical bills and part of lost wages regardless of fault (§ 31A-22-307; see how no-fault works in Utah). Under § 78B-5-818 you recover only if the defendants' combined fault exceeds yours. Most injury suits carry a four-year limit, but a crash involving a SunTran bus or a St. George City vehicle needs a notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). Our Utah deadlines page lists the rest.
Where St. George Rideshare Claims Get Harder
St. George Police take crashes in the city, the Washington County Sheriff's Office handles unincorporated areas, and the Utah Highway Patrol covers I-15 and the state routes, so note which agency came and the case number. Serious injuries generally go to St. George Regional Hospital, the area's Level II trauma center. A Washington County lawsuit is filed in the Fifth Judicial District Court at 206 West Tabernacle Street. When the rider, the driver or a witness lives out of state, statements and records have to be gathered from wherever they went home to. For other local claims, see our St. George personal injury page.
What a St. George Rideshare Claim Can Cover
- Financial losses: emergency and follow-up care, therapy, wages lost during recovery, and lost earning capacity, including for visitors who miss work back home.
- Non-economic losses: pain, disrupted sleep, and a vacation or a season of life taken over by an injury.
- Long-term needs: surgery, rehabilitation and in-home help for lasting injuries. Our article on Uber passenger settlement amounts explains the factors that move value.
- Wrongful death: claims surviving family members may bring when a crash takes a life, generally within two years.

Common Questions After a St. George Uber or Lyft Crash
I live out of state and was hurt in an Uber in St. George. Can I handle the claim from home?
Usually, yes. Utah law governs because the crash happened here, but much of the work can be done by phone and mail, and you can keep treating with your own doctors at home. If a lawsuit becomes necessary, it would likely be filed in Utah.
My driver was heading to pick someone up at the airport when he hit me. Which coverage applies?
Once the driver accepts a request, Utah treats the trip as a prearranged ride, so the drive to the pickup falls in the tier requiring at least $1,000,000 in liability coverage. Before acceptance, the lower waiting-period limits apply.
Does a rental car or out-of-state insurance change anything?
It can add policies. If another driver in a rental or with an out-of-state policy caused the crash, that coverage is responsible first, and the uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage carried during the ride may help if it falls short.
What does a St. George rideshare accident lawyer cost?
The consultation is free and the fee is contingent on a recovery. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.
How long do I have to bring a claim?
Four years for most injury claims and two years for wrongful death. A claim against a government entity, such as a city vehicle or a SunTran bus, requires a notice of claim within one year.
What should I keep from the app?
A screenshot of the trip screen, the emailed receipt, the driver's name and plate, and any messages. Save them before switching phones or deleting the app.
