Murray's Crash Corridors

Murray is small on the map and busy on the road. US-89 runs its length as State Street, I-15 and I-215 both cut through it, and Murray Central is where the TRAX Blue and Red lines connect with FrontRunner. Each produces a different crash and a different fight over fault. UDOT’s crash counts for each Murray street are on our Murray’s most dangerous roads page.

State Street (US-89)

Five-plus lanes, constant retail driveways and people crossing between bus stops. Turning and angle crashes dominate, and a case usually comes down to the signal phase and the gap a driver took.

I-15, I-215 and the ramps

Two interstates and their interchanges packed into a compact city, with ramps that back up quickly at rush hour. Rear-end chains and merge sideswipes are common, and interstate speed makes the injuries worse.

5300 South and Vine Street

East-west commuter routes linking I-15 to the east side, past schools and parks where people are on foot. Rear-end and turning conflicts at the signals are the usual pattern.

Murray Central Station

TRAX Blue and Red lines and FrontRunner share the station at about 5150 South, just west of Intermountain Medical Center. Pedestrian strikes and parking-lot collisions around it can involve UTA or a property owner as well as a driver.

The Intermountain Medical Center campus

Ambulances, shift changes and visitors unfamiliar with Cottonwood Street bring sudden stops and right-of-way disputes at the campus entrances.

Which agency, which deadline

Murray City Police cover city streets, and the Highway Patrol usually covers I-15 and I-215. A crash involving a TRAX or FrontRunner train, a UDOT work zone or a city vehicle starts a one-year notice clock under the Governmental Immunity Act.

Medical Bills After a Murray Crash

Your own PIP pays first under Utah's no-fault system: at least $3,000 in medical expenses, and 85% of lost gross wages up to $250 per week for up to 52 weeks. More on PIP.

A claim for pain and suffering against the other driver requires crossing Utah's injury threshold, meaning at least one of:

  • Medical bills above $3,000
  • Any fractured bone
  • Permanent impairment or disability supported by objective medical findings
  • Permanent scarring or disfigurement
  • Dismemberment
  • Death

Once over the threshold, the full claim runs against the at-fault driver's liability coverage, and your own UIM coverage can add to it if that policy runs out. UIM explained.

How Fault Gets Split

Under Utah Code § 78B-5-818 your recovery is cut by your share of fault, and it disappears entirely unless the other side's combined fault exceeds yours.

On State Street expect questions about your left turn; on the I-215 ramps, your following distance; near Murray Central, where the pedestrian stepped out. Early photos, station and business video, and witness contacts are what answer them.

Filing Deadlines

Most injury claims: four years. Wrongful death: two. A claim against UDOT, UTA or Murray City: notice within one year. See every deadline.
