Midvale's Crash Corridors

Midvale is compact, yet a US highway, an interstate and two TRAX lines all cross it. Much of the pavement where people get hurt belongs to UDOT, UTA or Salt Lake County rather than the city, and that shapes who investigates a crash and who may answer for it. The streets where Midvale’s crashes pile up are ranked on our Midvale’s most dangerous roads page.

State Street (US-89)

Several lanes of through traffic running past storefronts, apartments and bus stops, with long gaps between signals. Drivers cutting across lanes for a business entrance and people crossing mid-block are the recurring problems.

7200 South at I-15 (exit 297)

A single-point interchange that releases freeway traffic straight into turning cars, cyclists and riders walking to the Midvale Fort Union station. Left-turn crashes dominate here.

I-15 between 7200 South and 9000 South

Stop-and-go traffic between the two exits produces rear-end impacts and lane-change sideswipes, and the Utah Highway Patrol, not city officers, investigates them.

TRAX crossings and stations

Bingham Junction on the Red Line, plus Midvale Fort Union and Midvale Center on the Blue Line. Trains cross streets at grade, drivers turn across the tracks, and riders step off platforms into moving traffic.

Bingham Junction and the west side

The Bingham Junction redevelopment brought offices and delivery traffic to the west side of the city. Commercial vans and trucks carry larger policies and record telematics data that has to be demanded quickly before it is overwritten.

Which agency handles a Midvale crash

Midvale is patrolled by the Unified Police Department's Midvale Precinct at 7912 South Main Street. The Utah Highway Patrol takes I-15, and anything on UTA property produces a UTA report too. If a train, a bus, a UDOT work zone or a county vehicle was involved, a written notice of claim is due within one year.

PIP Pays First

Before anyone decides fault, your own personal injury protection covers at least $3,000 in medical bills and 85% of lost gross income, up to $250 a week for as long as 52 weeks, under Utah Code § 31A-22-307. Here is how Utah's no-fault system works.

A trip to the Level I trauma center at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray can pass $3,000 before real treatment begins. General damages such as pain and suffering from the at-fault driver open up under Utah Code § 31A-22-309 only with one of the following:

  • Medical expenses over $3,000
  • Any bone fracture
  • A permanent disability or impairment supported by objective findings
  • Disfigurement that is permanent
  • Loss of a limb or other dismemberment
  • Death

Meet any one and the full claim runs against the at-fault driver's liability coverage. When those limits fall short, your own underinsured motorist coverage can add to what their policy pays. UIM coverage explained.

Sharing Fault After a Midvale Crash

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 lowers your recovery by your own percentage of fault, and a finding that you were 50% or more responsible means no recovery at all.

At the 7200 South interchange the fight is usually over the left-turn arrow, and Utah Code § 41-6a-903 puts the duty to yield on the driver turning left. On State Street it is where a pedestrian crossed; near the stations, whether a driver watched for riders. Signal records, transit and business cameras, and witness accounts answer those questions only if someone asks for them in time.

Time limits

Four years to sue over most crash injuries (§ 78B-2-307), two years for wrongful death, and just one year for a notice of claim involving UTA, UDOT, Salt Lake County or Midvale City (§ 63G-7-402). Our deadline guide has the details.

Midvale Crash Cases We Handle

Interchange left-turn crashes

At 7200 South and I-15, where turning drivers misjudge the speed of cars coming off the ramp.

Freeway rear-end and lane-change crashes

On I-15 through Midvale, where sudden slowdowns chain several cars together. Neck and back injuries from these impacts can take weeks to declare themselves.

Train and bus collisions

Crashes with a TRAX train or UTA bus, and injuries around the stations. Each one carries the one-year government notice deadline, so do not wait.

Pedestrians and cyclists

People walking between a bus stop, a platform and home along State Street and 7200 South. Drivers must yield to anyone in a crosswalk under § 41-6a-1002; our pedestrian accident guide explains the rest.

Uninsured, underinsured and hit-and-run drivers

When the other driver has no insurance or flees, your UM coverage usually steps in. For a phantom vehicle that caused a crash without touching you, § 31A-22-305 requires clear and convincing proof beyond your own word, so collect witness names.

What To Do After a Midvale Crash

  • Call 911 and wait for a report. UPD's Midvale Precinct covers city streets, UHP covers I-15, and UTA documents its own incidents; write down the case number.
  • See a doctor the same day. Intermountain Medical Center in Murray is a Level I trauma center, and Alta View Hospital in Sandy has a 24-hour emergency department.
  • Photograph vehicle positions, the signal or crossing, skid marks, debris and any cones or work-zone signs; State Street reopens quickly.
  • Collect names and numbers from witnesses, including transit riders waiting on the platform.
  • Open a PIP claim with your insurer, skip the recorded statement to the other company, and do not cash an early check. Read how insurance claims get handled.

Midvale crash lawsuits are filed in the Third Judicial District Court for Salt Lake County, at the Matheson Courthouse (450 South State Street) or the West Jordan courthouse (8080 South Redwood Road). A traffic citation is a separate matter from your injury claim. More on our Midvale personal injury page and in what happens in a Utah injury case. Call (801) 921-5134. Free consultation.
