Sandy Rideshare Accident Lawyer
Hurt in an Uber or Lyft in Sandy? Which policy pays depends on the driver's app status when the crash happened, and we prove it with the trip data. Free consultation, no attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.
In Sandy, the rideshare rush comes in bursts. When a Real Salt Lake or Utah Royals match ends at America First Field, thousands of people spill onto State Street at once, and pickups stack up along the curbs near the Sandy Expo TRAX station. Weekend shopping around South Towne and ski trips toward Little Cottonwood Canyon add waves of their own.
Crowds, curbside stops and drivers scanning for their passenger lead to low-speed impacts that still cause real injuries, and to faster crashes on I-15 when a ride heads north. Either way, the claim depends on what the driver's app showed, and our legal team goes after that record.
Coverage Follows the App
Utah Code § 13-51-108 sets a different insurance minimum for each stage of a rideshare driver's shift:
- Off the app. The driver's personal policy is the only source, and personal policies are allowed to exclude rideshare driving.
- On the app, no request yet. At least $50,000 per person, $100,000 per crash and $30,000 in property damage coverage.
- Request accepted or rider aboard. At least $1,000,000 per occurrence in liability coverage, with PIP and uninsured/underinsured coverage where Utah requires them.
After a match, a driver may accept a request, lose it, and accept another within a few minutes, so the exact timeline matters. We match the crash time against the app's records instead of accepting the insurer's version. Read more in our rideshare insurance guide.
Who May Have a Claim in Sandy
You may be entitled to compensation if you were:
- A rider leaving America First Field, South Towne or a TRAX stop.
- In another vehicle on State Street, 9000 South or 10600 South when a rideshare driver hit you.
- Walking to or from an event and struck by a car making a pickup.
- Driving for Uber or Lyft when another motorist caused the collision.
Each position opens different insurance. For crashes that did not involve rideshare, see our Sandy car accident lawyer page.
Utah Law at a Glance
PIP covers the first layer of medical costs and part of lost wages regardless of fault (§ 31A-22-307; see the no-fault guide). Utah's comparative fault rule reduces your award by your share and bars it unless the defendants together were more at fault (§ 78B-5-818). Most claims must be filed within four years, and a claim involving UTA, including a TRAX train, needs a notice of claim within one year. All deadlines: Utah statute of limitations.
How Sandy Cases Unfold
Sandy City Police respond inside the city and the Utah Highway Patrol handles I-15. Many serious injuries are treated at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, a Level I trauma center. Salt Lake County lawsuits are filed in the Third Judicial District Court. Expect the insurer to question the app period and, after event crashes, whether a pedestrian stepped into traffic; stadium, TRAX and business video can answer that if it is requested quickly. See our Sandy personal injury page for more.

Common Questions After a Sandy Rideshare Crash
I was hit by an Uber driver picking up fans after a Real Salt Lake game. Who pays?
If the driver had accepted a request, Utah requires at least $1,000,000 in liability coverage. If the driver was only logged in and waiting, the minimum is $50,000 per person. The trip records show which applies.
My Lyft was rear-ended on I-15. Can I make a claim if my driver did nothing wrong?
Yes. The rear driver's insurer owes your claim first, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may be available if that policy falls short.
Can the rideshare insurer make me wait for the driver's personal insurer to deny the claim?
No. Utah law says the coverage required during the waiting period and prearranged rides cannot depend on the driver's personal insurer denying the claim first.
Do I have to pay anything to talk to you?
No. The consultation is free, and we work on contingency. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.
What is the filing deadline in Utah?
Four years for most injury lawsuits, two for wrongful death, and one year for a notice of claim if a government entity like UTA was involved.
What should I do right after the crash?
Get medical care, screenshot the ride in the app, photograph the scene and the cars, collect witness information, and call us before you speak with an insurer.
