Roads That Serve Morgan

Morgan sits in the Weber River valley between the Wasatch Front and the junction with I-80 at Echo. Interstate 84 is the lifeline; the state highway code runs it from near Roy through the canyon to I-80 near Echo. SR-66 comes north from East Canyon Reservoir through Porterville to I-84 in Morgan, and SR-167, Trappers Loop Road, climbs from near Mountain Green to SR-39 south of Huntsville. For many residents, work, shopping and specialized medical care are down the canyon.

I-84 through Weber Canyon

The interstate follows the river through the canyon between the Ogden area and Morgan. Heavy trucks, quick weather changes and drivers who treat it like an open freeway make multi-vehicle and jackknife crashes a real risk, and the Utah Highway Patrol usually investigates them.

Mountain Green and Trappers Loop

SR-167 leaves I-84 near Mountain Green and climbs over the ridge into Ogden Valley. Grades, curves, recreation traffic and drivers joining the interstate from the interchange create merging and loss-of-control crashes.

SR-66 south to Porterville and East Canyon

The two-lane road toward East Canyon Reservoir carries boat trailers in summer and snow in winter. With little room on curves, a vehicle crossing the center line is the usual cause of serious crashes.

Interchange traffic in town

Where local traffic enters and leaves I-84, drivers must merge with trucks moving at highway speed or slow sharply for an off-ramp. Rear-end and sideswipe collisions near the ramps are frequent claim types.

Canyon weather

A storm can turn the canyon from dry to snow-packed within a few miles. Section 41-6a-601 requires a speed suited to conditions even below the limit, and § 41-6a-711 requires a following gap of at least two seconds, so a pileup usually brings fault claims against several drivers at once.

Who takes the report

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office patrols around the clock, and the Utah Highway Patrol covers I-84; ask the responding officer which agency is writing the report. For a claim against Morgan City, Morgan County or UDOT, § 63G-7-402 requires a written notice of claim within one year.

PIP: The First Layer of Coverage

Utah's no-fault law sends early bills to your own insurer. Personal injury protection pays reasonable medical expenses up to at least $3,000 and replaces lost gross income at the lower of 85% or $250 a week for as long as 52 weeks (§ 31A-22-307). Read our no-fault overview.

No hospital in Morgan County appears on the state's trauma center list, so a serious canyon crash usually means a trip to McKay-Dee Hospital or Ogden Regional Medical Center, both Level II centers in Ogden. Once costs pass PIP, a claim for general damages against the at-fault driver requires one of the following under § 31A-22-309(1):

  • Medical expenses above $3,000
  • Fractured bones
  • A permanent disability or impairment based on objective findings
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Losing a limb
  • A death

Once that bar is cleared, the responsible driver's liability carrier must answer for the full loss. If that policy runs out, your underinsured motorist coverage can help cover the rest.

Fault After a Morgan County Crash

Under § 78B-5-818, you can recover only if the defendants together were more at fault than you, and your award is reduced by your own percentage.

Canyon cases often turn on speed for the weather, following distance behind a truck, and which vehicle started a chain of collisions. Truck data, dashcam footage and road-weather records answer those questions, and some of that evidence is overwritten quickly.

Filing deadlines

Four years for most personal injury suits (§ 78B-2-307), two years for wrongful death, and one year to give notice to Morgan City, Morgan County or UDOT. See our guide to Utah deadlines.

Morgan Crash Cases

Interstate and truck crashes

On I-84 through Weber Canyon, where a commercial carrier's logs and electronic data must be preserved early; our truck accident guide explains why.

Multi-vehicle winter pileups

Chain collisions on snow or ice, where several drivers and insurers share fault and each tries to push it onto someone else.

Mountain road crashes

On Trappers Loop and SR-66 toward East Canyon, where curves, grades and trailers make lane position the main question.

Ramp and merge collisions

At the I-84 interchanges, where a driver entering too slowly or changing lanes without room can cause a high-speed sideswipe.

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers

When the at-fault driver has no insurance, or flees and is never identified, your uninsured motorist coverage can respond under § 31A-22-305, and the injury threshold of § 31A-22-309(1) does not limit that claim. See our hit-and-run guide.

Right After a Morgan Crash

  • Call 911. On I-84, give your direction of travel and the nearest milepost if you can, and get the case number from the trooper or deputy.
  • Seek care the same day. McKay-Dee Hospital and Ogden Regional Medical Center in Ogden are the nearest Level II trauma centers.
  • If it is safe, photograph the vehicles, lane positions, road surface and weather; on the interstate, stay well clear of traffic.
  • Ask drivers who stopped for their names and numbers; most are only passing through.
  • Start a PIP claim with your insurer, and delay any recorded statement to another insurer until your injuries are diagnosed.

Morgan County is part of the Second Judicial District, with Weber and Davis counties, and injury suits from Morgan crashes are filed there. Most cases resolve without trial, but evidence has to be preserved right away. Call (801) 921-5134. Free consultation. No attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.
