Hurt in an Uber or Lyft in Holladay? Which policy pays turns on what the driver's app was showing at the moment of impact, and proving that is the first thing we do. Free consultation, no attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.
Holladay has no rail station of its own, so its rideshare traffic is nothing like the station-loop pattern found further west. Trips here begin and end at front doors: restaurant and bar runs to and from Holladay Village at Murray-Holladay Road and Holladay Boulevard, airport departures out of residential cul-de-sacs, and a heavy winter flow of canyon trips, since the Big Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway (SR-190) begins at 6200 South in Holladay and carries skiers to Solitude and Brighton. Riders heading for rail generally get dropped at Murray Central, a few minutes west.
Those pickups happen in awkward places: unlit residential streets with no shoulder, a restaurant curb on a Friday night, and the shoulder of a canyon approach road in weather. When a crash follows, the first question is not who drove carelessly but which insurance layer was switched on. Utah settles that by the driver's app status, and state law, not any city ordinance, controls: Utah Code § 13-51-109 makes the state act override local regulation of rideshare companies and drivers, apart from rules at airports.
Three App States, Three Levels of Coverage
Utah Code § 13-51-108 ties the required coverage to the driver's app status. For a crash on Highland Drive or the I-215 ramps at 4500 South, it breaks down like this:
- Logged out. The rideshare coverage the statute requires never attaches, so the driver's personal auto policy is the starting point. Personal policies often exclude rideshare driving (§ 13-51-108(11)), which is exactly why an insurer will fight about whether the app was truly off.
- Logged in with no ride accepted — the statute's waiting period. Minimum coverage is $50,000 for one injured person, $100,000 for the occurrence, and $30,000 in property damage.
- Trip accepted through drop-off. A prearranged ride begins the moment the driver accepts the request and runs until the passenger steps out (§ 13-51-102). Across that window Utah requires $1,000,000 per occurrence in liability coverage, together with PIP, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage to the extent Utah insurance law demands.
A driver who has just dropped a rider at a Holladay Boulevard restaurant and is rolling toward the next request can be in the waiting period one minute and on an accepted trip the next, and the difference between those two states is $950,000 of coverage. We request the acceptance timestamp, the trip log and the GPS record from the company instead of accepting an adjuster's summary of them. Our guide to rideshare insurance in Utah takes each period in turn.
Who Can Bring a Holladay Rideshare Claim
The rideshare policy can reach people on either side of the collision:
- Riders picked up at a Holladay home, at Holladay Village or on a canyon trip.
- Other motorists on Murray-Holladay Road, Highland Drive, Wasatch Boulevard or the I-215 ramps struck by a rideshare car.
- People on foot crossing to a bus stop or stepping off a curb toward a waiting car.
- Uber and Lyft drivers injured by someone else while logged in.
Which policies come into play depends on your role and on the driver's app status. Where no rideshare vehicle was involved, see our Holladay car accident lawyer page.
Utah Law Behind a Holladay Rideshare Claim
PIP pays early medical bills and part of your lost income regardless of fault (§ 31A-22-307; how no-fault works). Utah Code § 78B-5-818 permits recovery only where the fault of those you sue exceeds your own, and your share comes off the award. Most injury suits carry four years, but a crash involving a UTA bus or a Holladay City vehicle requires a notice of claim inside one year (§ 63G-7-402). See our Utah filing deadlines.
Holladay Details That Shape the Case
The Unified Police Department Holladay Precinct, at 4580 South 2300 East, responds on city streets, while the Utah Highway Patrol generally takes I-215. Winter canyon trips add their own evidence questions, since road conditions, traction-device requirements and closure timing on SR-190 can all bear on how a crash happened. If suit is necessary it goes to Salt Lake County's Third District Court at the Matheson Courthouse, 450 South State Street, or the West Jordan courthouse on Redwood Road. For injuries not involving a vehicle, our Holladay personal injury page has more.
Damages in a Holladay Rideshare Case
- Financial losses: emergency and hospital charges, follow-up treatment, time away from work and any lasting reduction in earning power.
- Human losses: pain, unease about getting back into a car, and the things you no longer do.
- Future treatment: surgery, therapy and help at home where injuries do not fully resolve. Our article on what drives Uber passenger settlement amounts covers the factors.
- Wrongful death, where a rideshare crash takes a life — see our Holladay wrongful death page.

Questions After an Uber or Lyft Crash in Holladay
My Lyft crashed heading up Big Cottonwood Canyon from Holladay. Whose insurance pays?
On an accepted trip Utah requires at least $1,000,000 per occurrence, alongside the PIP and UM/UIM coverage the statute carries. Where another motorist caused the crash, that driver's insurer may owe the claim too. Winter conditions on Wasatch Boulevard are not by themselves an excuse — see how fault is proven.
Does Holladay have its own rideshare rules?
No. Utah Code § 13-51-109 makes the state act override city regulation of rideshare companies and drivers, except at airports, so the same coverage rules apply in Holladay as anywhere else in Utah.
The driver says the app was off. How do we check?
The company retains log-in, acceptance and GPS records. We ask for them early and set them against your receipt, your messages and any photographs taken at the scene.
What does a Holladay rideshare accident lawyer cost?
The consultation is free and the case runs on contingency. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.
How long do I have?
Generally four years for injury and two for wrongful death. Where a UTA vehicle or a Holladay City vehicle is involved, a written notice of claim falls due within one year. Our deadlines page sets out the rest.
What should I do at the scene?
Get checked the same day, screenshot the trip and the receipt before the app refreshes, note the driver's name and plate, photograph both vehicles and the roadway, collect witness numbers, and write down the Unified Police case number.
