Bike crashes in Herriman follow the calendar. UDOT’s crash records show that every bicycle crash at a Herriman traffic signal in the complete years 2018 through 2024 happened between June and August, four of them in August alone, and all of them in daylight, as counted on our Herriman dangerous intersections page. Summer is when school is out, more kids and adults are riding, and drivers on the wide arterials are least prepared to share the road.

Those crashes bunched up on a few east-west roads. The signal at 13400 South and 5600 West recorded three, more than any other in the city; Herriman Parkway (12600 South) at Herriman Main Street (5100 West) recorded two; and one each was logged at Herriman Parkway and Anthem Park Boulevard and at 11800 South and Mustang Trail Way. UDOT coded none of the seven as serious or fatal, but a small count says nothing about how badly the person on the bike was hurt. For an injury that did not involve a bicycle, start with our Herriman personal injury page.

Rules of the Road for Herriman Cyclists

A person riding a bicycle has the same rights, and owes the same duties, as the driver of any other vehicle (Utah Code § 41-6a-1102). Drivers owe riders something extra: under § 41-6a-706.5 it is an infraction to knowingly, intentionally or recklessly drive within three feet of a cyclist, and a class C misdemeanor when the rider is injured. On busy arterials like 13400 South and Rosecrest Road, that margin is what separates a pass from a sideswipe.

Car doors. Nobody may open a door on the side of moving traffic unless it can be done safely and without interfering with that traffic (§ 41-6a-1704); our guide to dooring crashes explains who pays. E-bikes and kids. Herriman’s e-bike page reminds families that riders under 21 must wear a helmet on public roads, that riders 8 to 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and that no one under 16 may ride a Class 3 e-bike. For riders that helmet statute covers, including e-bike riders, § 41-6a-1505(6) still bars treating a missing helmet as comparative negligence or offering it as evidence in a civil case.

Which Policies Pay a Herriman Cyclist

Several layers of insurance can apply when a car hits a bike:

  • The driver’s liability policy, which pays for medical care, lost income and pain once fault is shown. For policies issued or renewed since January 1, 2025, Utah’s floor is $30,000 per person (§ 31A-22-304).
  • Your own auto policy, even though you were on a bike. Depending on how it defines a covered person, PIP may pay early bills and lost wages, and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage can apply when the driver fled or carried too little.

PIP in Utah means at least $3,000 in medical benefits plus 85% of lost gross income, capped at $250 a week for up to 52 weeks (§ 31A-22-307). One surgery can outrun both PIP and a minimum liability policy, so finding every available policy matters. The Utah bicycle accident claims guide shows the order in which they pay.

Fault and Filing Deadlines

Any share of fault assigned to the rider reduces the recovery, and 50% or more bars it (§ 78B-5-818). Most claims against a driver must be filed within four years (§ 78B-2-307). A claim against Herriman City, Salt Lake County or UDOT, over a road defect or a government vehicle for example, requires a written notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). Our statute of limitations page covers the rest.

Herriman Roads and Trails Riders Use

13400 South. Its three modeled signals account for 8 of the 20 pedestrian and bicycle crashes at Herriman signals in UDOT’s data, and 5600 West is the corner where riders were hit most. Herriman Parkway and Herriman Main Street. The route past City Hall at 5355 West Herriman Main Street, with traffic turning in and out of shops and lots. 11800 South. The northern edge toward Daybreak, where the signal at the Mountain View Corridor carries the model’s highest rider estimate in the city, about 31 a day. New subdivision streets. Fresh asphalt, construction gravel and cars backing out of driveways.

Off the street, Herriman’s city trails are closed to motorized vehicles, and the city asks that dogs stay on leash there. West of town, Salt Lake County’s Southwest Canyons Trail Network takes in Rose, Yellow Fork and Butterfield canyons; the county limits mountain biking to select areas, and Butterfield Trailhead Regional Park alone has more than 13 miles of multi-use trail. A trail crash usually involves another trail user or the trail’s condition, and if a county or city crew maintains it, the one-year notice rule applies.

How Riders Get Hit in Herriman

A driver turning right across a rider at a signal; a left turn timed to oncoming cars that never registers the bike; a car rolling through a subdivision stop sign onto an arterial; a pass with less than three feet to spare; a door swung open beside a parked car. On summer evenings, westbound drivers on 13400 South and Herriman Parkway face the setting sun, which makes every one of those worse.

Injuries and Treatment

A rider takes the impact with nothing around them, so broken wrists and collarbones, head injuries, shoulder separations, pelvic and spinal injuries and road rash are typical, often together. Intermountain Riverton Hospital at 3741 West 12600 South is a Level IV trauma center; serious trauma is transferred to the Level I center at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. If you carry PIP, a pain-and-suffering claim against the driver generally requires crossing the § 31A-22-309 threshold, such as a broken bone or more than $3,000 in medical expenses.

What a Claim Can Cover

  • Financial losses: ambulance and hospital bills, physical therapy, missed paychecks, reduced earning capacity, and the bike, helmet and gear that were wrecked.
  • Human losses: pain, lost sleep, and the riding season, races or commutes you had to give up.
  • Long-term needs: future surgery, ongoing therapy and help at home when an injury does not fully heal.

Answering the Insurer

Adjusters like to say the rider came out of nowhere, rode against traffic, or belonged on a trail instead of the road. Evidence is the answer: photos of the bike and the scene, GPS data from a phone or bike computer, doorbell video from houses along the street, and the signal timing at the intersection. Much of it is gone within days. If you were in a car, our Herriman car accident page fits better.

Rider Questions

Herriman Bicycle Accident FAQs

I was hit at 13400 South and 5600 West. Does it matter that other riders were hit there?

It can. UDOT recorded three bicycle crashes at that signal between 2018 and August 2025, and a history like that is relevant if the road design or signal timing becomes part of the claim. Your claim against the driver still depends on what that driver did. If a public road design is involved, a notice of claim is due within one year.

My child was riding an e-bike without a helmet. Can the insurer use that?

Not as evidence of negligence. Utah Code § 41-6a-1505(6) says failing to wear protective headgear is not comparative negligence and cannot be introduced in a civil case on negligence, injuries or mitigation of damages. Riders under 21 are still required to wear one on public roads.

Will my car insurance help even though I was on my bike?

Often. Depending on how your policy defines a covered person, PIP may pay initial medical bills and part of lost wages, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may apply if the driver took off or had low limits.

I crashed on a county trail west of Herriman. Who is responsible?

That depends on the cause. If another trail user hit you, that person and their insurance may be responsible. If the trail itself was the problem, the claim may be against Salt Lake County, which requires a written notice of claim within one year.

What will it cost me?

Nothing to get started. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.

How long do I have to file?

Usually four years against a driver, two years for a wrongful death claim, and one year to give notice to a government entity. Video and witness memory fade far sooner, so earlier is better.
