South Jordan Rideshare Accident Lawyer

Hurt in an Uber or Lyft in South Jordan? Who pays depends on the driver's app status, and our legal team works to pin that down. Free consultation, no attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.

South Jordan's rideshare pickups cluster around its rail stops. The FrontRunner station sits at 10351 South Jordan Gateway near I-15, and the TRAX Red Line ends in Daybreak, with stations at South Jordan Parkway (10605 South Grandville Avenue) and Daybreak Parkway (11405 South Grandville Avenue). Add dinners and errands at The District, and a lot of short Uber and Lyft trips cross Bangerter Highway and Mountain View Corridor every evening.

Those crossings have changed fast. Bangerter now runs through underpass interchanges at 9800, 10400 and 11400 South, and Mountain View Corridor still has signals at its cross streets. A rideshare driver glancing at a phone for the next request is making the same merges as everyone else. When a crash happens, the dispute usually starts over which insurance period applied.

How the Driver's App Status Sets Coverage

Required coverage under Utah Code § 13-51-108 changes with the driver's status. In South Jordan crashes we sort it this way:

  • Not signed in. Only the driver's personal auto policy is in play. Utah allows those policies to exclude rideshare use (§ 13-51-108(11)), so if that insurer says the driver was working, a gap can appear, and we look to every other source, including your own uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
  • Signed in and available. During this waiting period the minimum is $50,000 per injured person, $100,000 per occurrence and $30,000 for property damage.
  • On an accepted trip. From acceptance until the rider exits, the required liability limit is $1,000,000 per occurrence, along with PIP and UM/UIM protection as Utah law requires. That policy cannot make payment depend on the driver's personal insurer first denying the claim (§ 13-51-108(10)).

A driver heading to the Daybreak Parkway platform to meet a rider is already on an accepted trip, even with nobody in the car. Proving that takes the trip record, the moment the request was accepted and GPS data, all held by the company, so we request it early. Our Utah rideshare insurance guide explains more.

Who Has a Claim in South Jordan

A rideshare crash can open a claim for:

  • Riders coming from the FrontRunner or Red Line stations or The District.
  • Drivers and passengers in other cars on Bangerter, 10400 South or 11400 South.
  • Walkers and cyclists on Daybreak's streets and trail crossings.
  • Rideshare drivers struck by another motorist while logged in.

Each role can reach a different policy. For a crash with no rideshare car, see our South Jordan car accident lawyer page.

Utah Rules for South Jordan Riders

No-fault PIP pays the first layer of medical bills and part of lost wages whatever the cause (§ 31A-22-307; no-fault basics). Fault is compared under § 78B-5-818, and you recover nothing unless the defendants' combined fault is greater than yours. The usual injury deadline is four years; a claim tied to a UTA train, UDOT or South Jordan City needs a notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). Utah deadline guide.

South Jordan Specifics

South Jordan Police handle crashes on city streets, and the Utah Highway Patrol generally works I-15. Intermountain Riverton Hospital is nearby for evaluation, and serious trauma goes to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, a Level I center. Lawsuits are filed in Third District Court for Salt Lake County, at the Matheson Courthouse (450 South State Street) or the West Jordan courthouse (8080 South Redwood Road). For other injuries in the city, see our South Jordan personal injury page.

What a South Jordan Claim Can Include

  • Out-of-pocket costs: medical and ambulance bills, rehab, lost pay and reduced ability to earn.
  • Non-economic harm: physical pain, emotional strain and lost enjoyment of daily life.
  • Care down the road: future procedures and assistance for lasting injuries. See the factors in Uber passenger settlements.
  • Family claims: wrongful death damages when a rideshare crash is fatal.

South Jordan Rider Questions

South Jordan Uber and Lyft Accident FAQ

An Uber on its way to a pickup at the FrontRunner station hit my car. Which coverage applies?

The $1,000,000 layer. Utah defines a prearranged ride as starting when the driver accepts the request (§ 13-51-102), so a driver en route to a rider is covered at the higher limit even with an empty back seat.

Can the rideshare insurer wait for the driver's own insurer to deny the claim first?

No. Section 13-51-108(10) bars the required rideshare policy from making coverage depend on the personal insurer denying the claim first.

I was the passenger. What do I have to prove?

PIP benefits pay regardless of fault. For a claim beyond PIP, we have to show who caused the crash, whether that was your driver, another motorist or both, and then pursue each responsible party's coverage.

How much does a South Jordan rideshare accident lawyer charge?

Nothing to start. We take cases on contingency: you pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.

What is the deadline?

Usually four years for injury claims and two for wrongful death, with a one-year notice requirement if a UTA train, UDOT or the city is involved.

What evidence should I keep?

Your trip receipt and screenshots, the driver's name and plate, in-app messages, scene photos, witness names and the police case number.
